Description

Virgil Erath is on death row for a crime he didn't commit. But he gets a new beginning when he is mystically transported to a planet of hallucinatory landscapes, warring humanoid races, and a cloud-filled sky that has never seen the sun. Its inhabitants of this world call it Amtor--others have called it "Venus."Captured by a clan of winged warriors, Virgil is brought before the great Jong Kum Kloojong. But this "king of kings" is under attack by a deadly terrorist sect, and Virgil may be his only hope of saving Amtor from an apocalyptic war.THE WILD ADVENTURES OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHSIn the Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs series, today's authors innovate and expand upon Burroughs' classic tales of wonder in truly wild fashion, even moving his characters and storylines outside the bounds of canon to alternate universes! Skies of Venus, the latest volume in the series, transports readers back to the mysterious, shrouded world of Amtor that was discovered by Carson Napier in Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic novel Pirates of Venus, but this time to experience it through the eyes of an Earthman of the twenty-first century.Copyright (c) Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Skies of Venus by Neal RomanekVirgil Erath is in prison, in fact, strapped down on the gurney ready to be executed. That he did not actually commit the murders for which he has been given lethal injection is beside the point. But Virgil has been visited by a mysterious “angel.” This “angel” has told him to be ready, and to be sure not to let go of the “angel’s” hand.As the execution proceeds, Virgil suddenly sees this “angel” who stretches out his hand and tells him to grab on. But Virgil is rebellious by nature and breaks free. He sees his body lying on the gurney, then the rush of a million miles. He eventually wakes up naked on a strange planet of giant purple trees. And he finds himself attacked by a bird-bat-like man. This apparition calls him maita-gan, which he later learns on Amtor means, in referring to his many tattoos, “painted man.”Thus begins a new adventure in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Venus series. Carson Naiper, King of Kings on Amtor has brought Virgil to his kingdom as a brother, friend, and ally. And because of where he landed on Amtor, Virgil has many adventures BEFORE he even meets Carson of Venus. He forges friendships that will last.Mr. Romanek has taken the source material, stayed true to it, and managed to make it his own at the same time. Virgil Erath is a fully developed character and fits firmly within the Venus universe. It is obvious that he will have his own backup characters, but never stray far from the original. The scenery is told in wonderful detail as well, both fauna and flora.I give the book five stars.Quoth the Raven…
